MLTC NEWSLETTER 16th APRIL 2026

Please note that going forward the Newsletter will be issued on a Friday morning and no longer on a Thursday, for operational reasons.  Thank you for your continued support in reading the Newsletter and keeping up to date with Club News.  We also appreciate if you have friends in the club who are not on email for various reasons that you might share the news with them.  We will also be posting a few copies of the Newsletter in the clubhouse going forward.

PROGRESS OF COURTS CONSTRUCTION WORKS

New Tennis Courts - Latest Update

The contractor continues to make excellent progress with the installation of our new tennis courts:

•           Work on court 1 was completed on Tuesday. This court is now available for play (in addition  to courts 4, 5, and 6).

•           Next step for the contractor will be to complete work on courts 2 and 3. Work on these courts is already well advanced.

•           Expectation is that the contractor will finish the project this Saturday evening (April 18)

•           All six courts will be available for play from Sunday morning (April 19).

This timeline is one week earlier than originally scheduled and project remains on budget too.  This is an excellent outcome for the club.

With the courts fully operational there are a few finishing elements that we will look to complete over the next few weeks.  This information will feature in an email broadcast to the club members tomorrow.

We thank you for your patience over the last five weeks.  The club leadership is grateful for your cooperation. The success of this project owes much to you.

The tennis court facilities at MLTC now rank among the newest and best in the country. This is a brilliant development for the club and for the future of tennis in Monkstown. Enjoy!

From Margaret Quinn (club president) and the courts subcommittee (Kevin Polley, Helen Bunbury, Jemma Houlihan, Fiona O’ Sullivan, and Declan Cotter).

GROUNDSMAN

I am delighted to announce that David Pritchard will be joining us next week to assist with the grounds/clubhouse works.  David is originally from Wales but has been in Dublin now for many years.  He has much experience in keeping grounds/facilities and I know that you will extend a great welcome to him when you see him around the club.

ADMINISTRATION/OFFICE

We also welcome Lisa O’Sullivan to assist with the office admin on a short- term contract as Anne Crossan prepares to retire at the end of May.  We thank Anne for her many years of service to the club, and support to many Executive Committees, she will be greatly missed.

VISITORS FEES

Having had a suggestion from a member that we might consider reducing the fee for visitors we have taken this on board and decided to change the fee from €10.00 per guest to €10.00 per court so it is now the same fee whether it is one guest or 3 guests.

We welcome any suggestions and ideas for the club by emailing into the office or using the suggestion box on the wall in the foyer.  We greatly appreciate members taking the time to do so.  All ideas will be given due consideration by the Executive.

UPDATE FROM HEAD COACH STEPHEN

Some excellent performances at open tournaments over Easter.

Templeogue Junior Tour 1250  - U/12 Winner -  Richie Kennedy

U/18  R/up  -  Mary O'Callaghan

Kilkenny Junior Tour 250  -  U/14  R/up -  Sam Carney

Leinster Matchplay in Donabate  -  R/up -  Zach O'Rourke

Congrats all round  -  the club is very proud of you all!

One of the first of our members to try out our new clay courts was none other than Conor Gannon, who is back in Ireland briefly after a stretch of four tournament weeks in North Africa.

Conor had a high - powered hitting session with current Club Champion Mary O'Callaghan - herself in great form after recent domestic tournament successes.

Conor will spend the next few weeks in England, where he will continue his performance training programme at Bath University before competing in tournaments across England in May. He is super fit and settling into the professional circuit very well.

In June attention turns to Davis Cup action in Moldova, followed by what should be a hugely exciting week at Elm Park, where an ATP Challenger 75 tournament will be played on their grass courts.

Congrats to George McGill who warmed up for Summer League by winning the Men's Over 30 Singles title at the South of Ireland Masters at his childhood club, Limerick Lawn, where he was granted Honorary Life membership earlier this year.

The Men's Monday night session continues to go from strength to strength with over 20 players taking part this week.

Huge credit must go to the driving force behind this success, who of course is Declan Cotter - a real club man!

Wednesday night training for the Ladies has also proved to be a positive addition - with a core group of 12 in attendance.

A reminder to all members that everyone is welcome to Club Night  - every Thursday at 8pm!

Finally,  it's great to see some of the new courts in use and to hear the positive feedback about them.  As soon as all the courts are in action, I'll be present in the club each morning (Mon - Fri) of the 'opening' week to answer any questions relating to the surface that any players may have.

 All the best         Stephen
